...to door panel? The assembly manual and the parts catalogs all say you just "staple" it on. Sounds easy enough. Buy new seals, take off the old, staple on the new.
So I get the door panel off and look at the old rotten seal. Ok, the "staples" are pretty stout, and the ends are curled up under the lip, so I get out the dremel and cut the ends off. No problem. I pull the old seal off, pull out the ends of the staples, and discover the lip is metal. How in the heck am I supposed to get new staples through that? For that matter, how did they get the original staples in there? It's a pretty tight space under the lip. Did the factory have some hydraulic staple press?
I plan on taking it to an auto upholstery shop to see if they can fix me up, but otherwise I might have to glue it. Any ideas?
Some people have been known to drill out the original holes, a tiny bit, to make putting the new staples through the same holes a little easier.
Regards,
Alan
Most people rivet them and then touch the rivet up with flat black paint. Of course the NCRS will ding you for rivets, if your thinking of ever going that way. They want to see staples.
Thanks guys. I was thinking rivets, so your ideas confirm mine. I don't care so much about NCRS, so I'm ok with that. It would be too hard to get new staples to line up with the old holes, but I did consider that too.
