Where do the tips go....front or rear...Just kidding!!!!
Seriously, how far do the tips stick out from the bezels? Are they supposed to be flush or stick out, and if they do, how far???
I see that you have a '70 model convertible. The top edge of the exhaust tip should stick out past the top beveled lip of the exhaust bezel by 1/2" inch or slightly less.
Ctrain,
I was curious about about your question, and I'd never thought about it. So I checked the 71 AIM.
It says to center the tip left to right in the bezel. There is a dimension for how far down from the top of the bezel the tip should be, but the print is blurred in my copy of the AIM, so I can't read it.
Now for the good part... UPC 8, Sheet A 3, View C, shows a tab welded to the top of the short pipe coming out of the muffler that acts as a stop for the chrome tip as you slide it on. So now all we need is someone with an ORIGINAL exhaust system and and a ruler.

Alan
No doubt that tab on the pipe and the slot on the tip would make them all the same. The frame and the body had some room to move and by how deep the pipe was inserted into the conection at the transmission bracket. I'm sure their was some difference when they were made.Years ago I bought an original 73 L-82 exhaust system with the tips still on but have never found that special car to put them on to tell how far they stick out. The tips were tight on the pipes when I bought it and a 73 did not have the slot in the tip.
Lyle,
So what your saying is that all the cars were NOT built EXACTLY the same???? WOW that's a surprise!
The sad part is probably not even two were the same!!!

Alan
I have seen them nearly flush on very original exhaust system cars. This is one of those Friday things. I think if it were Friday at the factory they just put them on and tightened! I think they work best when they stick out 1/2 inch or thereabouts to carry exhaust away from the bezel and lower surround. The main thing that I try to do is get them even which has taken me a couple of hours sometimes as I loosen, lower, pull and spin each one and stand back and look. It helps to get a small object like a bolt to help gauge each one before i tighten them.
How come the bezels are all outward angled a little & all the exhaust systems I have seen have the pipes come straight out?
Makes it kinda hard to center the tips!
