I have just removed the paint from my 70 L46 Valve Covers. Someone painted them yellow How were they originally finished? Raw Alum or maybe cleared? Anyone have pics?
70 L46 Valve covers on base engines were steel painted valve covers and not aluminum. Chevy Orange was the color pictured below.
If you have the aluminum valve covers, here is what they would have looked like. These were only used in 1970 on cars with H/Per engine option. (Pictured below)

The previous owner of my car put finned valve covers on my '71's L48. They are really difficult to keep clean and shiny. I'm debating whether to use some original orange steel valve covers or to powder coat the finned ones silver. Maybe I could keep both on hand and use whichever pair suits my mood.
Hi rcr,
If the finned valve covers you have are set up to use the push-in rubber oil-fill plug you should be sure to hang on to them since they're not being reproduced.
If they're the more common finned valve covers with the twist-in oil cap you might consider having them powder coated. Someone posted some pictures of silver powder coated covers and I thought they looked great.

Alan
