When I start up my 76- 4 speed and pull the shifter into neutral, it does not engage the neutral position, When I proceed to shift into first, it still does not engage.
After a number of shifts back into the reverse position, the shifter does engage and I can move the car forward.
PLease advise as to what may be causing this shifter stick and what are some remedies.
It sounds as if your shift linkage needs adjusting. You should also check the bolts/nuts that hold the shift levers onto the transmission and make sure they are tight.
If those are ok, check the mounting bolts for the shifter itself and the shifter mounting bracket to make sure they are not loose.
I would first go to the linkage and check it out. Make sure the linkage is not bent and check the holes in the shifter levers to make sure they are not oval instead of round. Here is a page with shifter linkage adjustment instructions in real nice detail. http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=177
If this did not fix the problem, I would then look at the shifter. The gates can wear out as can the center pin and this could also cause your problem.
