I am about to have my turbo 400 transmission rebuilt. It is going behind A GMPP ZZ383, about 400HP. Everyone has told me that a standard rebuild on this turbo 400 will hold up behind my motor. Should I have the tech install a shift kit during the rebuild? My Tech says to stick to the stock torque converter stall, which I think is around 1600. I do not really understand this subject, but was under the impression that a higher stall was appropriate for this 400HP engine. Any info or advice is appreciated.
The 400 stock will hold up just fine. a shift kit will be ok unless they use a B&M. use Transgo ot similar. jus ta regular old shift kit. no stage 2 or 3 reprograming kits. the corvette 400 converters were 2000 stall factory and they get bought up by the racers who know. if you use a higher stall it will rob you on the top and if you use a lower stall it will rob you on the bottom. hope thsi helps.
btw a high stall will also cause heat problems in engine and tranny
IF you going to do much freeway driving, I would consider a 200 4r automatic with lockup converter and overdrive......and at any rate the ONLY shift kits worth a damn are the TRANS GO kits, and I would never rebuild any tranny without one, except a old Torqueflight....but that's Chrysler, so not a issue here.....
TransGo is the best kit. Your torque convertor stall shd be
about 500 higher than when your cam comes up on the pipe. Too high and it spins and overheats itself and the tranny. Rear gearing is a factor in torque convertor selection too. Call TCI or Hughes techline for best stall recommendation.

"Stock converter" for what? The original engine for that car? NO! The tranny will hold up fine; but call a good converter supplier and tell him what engine you are wanting to hook up to the THM400. Then you can decide what stall speed you want: normal driving 1800-2000; a bit peppier but poorer gas mileage....2500; full race and lousy street manners....3000. Don't just ask for a converter at Auto-Zone [or wherever].........they're clueless about such things.
