Default Cruise control question ...

Hello all,
'78 Silver Anniversary model; I can't set the cruise until I am doing at least 65mph, then the car accelerates to 75. How do I change it to stay at 65?
Thank you.

It can be adjusted if the speed inceases from the speed it was set at, but if it only can be set when you are going 65 mph, I have to agree it is bad or that you may have vacuum leaks in the hoses. Does it dis-engage when you apply the brakes?
It should be able to engage at 50mph. Keep us informed. "DUB"

I have to try several times to get it to engage, but I can engage it at speeds in excess of 60mph.

Either the control head is malfunctioning or the engagement switch is intermittant. You can check the switch by removing the switch cable connector from its socket [the three wire cable/connector at the base of the steering column/dash panel] and checking continuity for all switch conditions. If the switch is working properly, your problem [most likely] is the control head. If you are 'mechanically inclined', pull the control head and carefully disassemble it. It may be dirty (internal orifices/friction wheel) or damaged. If you don't spot any significant damage, clean it up, reassemble and install it; then try it again. {P.S. You may find something obviously wrong as you work through this problem.} Note: Since it works at all...at 60 mph...the system is probably 'functional'. Your problem may be easily solved.
