Tapered end will be up to fit to the flared hose end.
So yes the small end gets pressed into the steering box. Mine were really tight, and you have to make sure it is seated all the way or you won't have enough threads to tighten the fitting.
There is another thread that shows a fitting that adapts from the flared hose to the o-ring box. Some have had to use this to solve small leaks.
I am not much of a mechanic, so you have been a great help. I really appreciate it. Thank you!

These are the Flare adapters mine came with. they are basically push in, but might need to be tapped in place lightly. did your set up come with these? My box came with two tie wrapped to it and the set of hoses also came with a set of the same style adapters.
No need to apologize. That issue was handled already.
I do have a new problem. Last Tuesday I picked up my Vette after having an alignment. Today was the 4th time I have driven it since then. When I was leaving a cruise in I noticed I had a problem with my steering. I looked underneath the car and I did not see anything wrong. When I started driving, the steering was taking me all over the road if I went more then 25mph. I put it on the hoist and I didn't see anything wrong. Any suggestions on what might be wrong?
