I was taking out my blown motor and getting ready to replace it. The bolt on the drivers side motor mount looked like a factory bolt and was grade 8. The other was a grade 5. so I figured I get the correct bolts in there on both sides. Paragon sell the bolts, but one says it is a "E" Headmark Bolt,, the other "A" Headmark Bolt.
Anyone tell me the difference and which one is stronger? By the way, the car is modified so I can time trail it. So getting the original type bolt is not a priority.
it is my understanding that both bolts are the same - and any car could have any combination of the two on any part of the engine - in my particular case...i was looking for original head bolts and was told that the difference in the bolt was only the parts supplier - and that when engines were built - the engine builder would pick up whatever bolts were in his bin - and bolt the heads down....
there was a guy on either side of the engine...so if one guy happened to have "a" bolts and the other guy had "b" bolts - thats what went into your car....if you dont know exactly what grade bolt came out of what hole...then you can get either - or both - as that is correct...
SAE bolt "grade" markings are the 'dashes' on the top of the bolt head. If there are 3 dashes (one on every other point), it's a Grade 5 bolt; if it has 6 dashes (one on every point), it's a Grade 8 bolt. I would think that a Grade 5 bolt would be better in a motor mount application, as it is more malleable; but you should install what the manufacturer [or the motor mount vendor] recommends.
