Hey guys,
where do i look to find a replacement harness for my 69 vette? My mechanic tried fixing a problem with the dash last year and only made things worse...now he's saying the harness is so brittle he has to replace it. He said $500 for just the harness. He didnt say what labor costs would be. This guys been working on the car for years ever since my dads owned it back in 72, but recently it seems like he's been getting kinda shady. My dad's never been one to check his prices but i like checking everything out before we do work on the car. $500 may be a good price for this harness but i'd like to see it in writing some where first.
thanks!
They range in price, depends where you get them.
thepartsladi has them at $407 on fleabay.
Mid America have them at $450.....
just talked to the mechanic again...we're going to hold off...he says its just stiff but shouldnt be a problem with working whats in there. Replacing the harness would get us in way over our head for an unrestored driver.
So one minute the harness is brittle and needs to be replaced by the mechanic that did some work on the very same harness not so long ago making things worse.....and now its just stiff but shouldnt be a problem?
Walk away my friend. Possibly this guy has been dealing with the car for so long now, he see's it as open check time.
Find a mecahnic who cares about you and your Vette.
Saftey should always come first.

when i first posted up i was going by what my dad said, and since then i've called and talked to the guy myself. He said the harness isnt brittle, just stiff.
This guy has been pretty good to us over the years, but usually likes to take his sweet time with things. He knows the car inside and out so i'd hope he wouldnt send us out with the chance of something catastrophic happening.
for now i'll go by his word, hopefully it doesnt bite me in the *** down the road.
Hi S69,
I believe the only place the harness is and should be stiff is as it comes up from the fuse box and heads over past the tach and speedometer. The harness has LOTS of wires in it at that point so it's thick and stiff. It becomes very flexible as soon as it gets past the speedometer.
The dash harness is often in the best condition of the 4 harnesses on the car because it's lived the most sheltered life. Bubba is usually the dash harness' biggest enemy.
Regards,
Alan
Does the harness need to be replaced? It's 40 years old and might be showing its age. $500 spent now could save you from a fire.
$500 is not that out-there for a dash harness. You don't want to see what happens when one shorts out. Get a 'Lectric Limited harness, Last Detail has good prices on them.
