Default Number matching water pump?

All,

When I purchased my 78 Pace Car the seller gave me the old water pump and told me it was the original (it was changed out). The rest of the car is quite original (carb, dist, alternator, engine & trans) but I was looking at the pump tonight and wondering if I should keep it.

Any thoughts? Are these pumps kind of non specific in terms of when they were made and how that date corresponds to the car?

Thank you,
Dan

If all the other accessories (P/S pump, alternator, distributor, starter, A/C compressor, etc.) are all original units, then it might be of some value to rebuild the pump and reinstall it. For most late 70's C3's it wouldn't really matter...unless it were for a pristine 'survivor'...but for a Pace Car that is all-original (except for the water pump) it would be a nice touch to "complete the package".

Water pumps have a part number and date code cast into the housing. If yours is the original, I'd hang onto it.

When my water pump went I kept the original. I bought a rebuilt one with the correct date. Now if you want the original one that is fine, but as long as the new one is the same casting it will not matter with NCRS. Your date is hidden by the pulley and can not be seen unless the pulley is removed. At least it is that way on my 70.

Its not difficult to find correct part numbered and dated water pumps. If you have the original and it's rebuildable, all the better.

Water pump numbers don't "match"- they are correct.

Hi Dan,
I believe Arthur Gould in New York rebuilds original water pumps if that interests you.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Regards,
Alan

It could be said that if the casting number and date of a new pump are the same the ones on the original they therefore 'match'. 'Correct' could mean that a range of casting numbers (if applicable) or dates would be considered typical of factory production.

But neither are the original.
