I have always had one on all my motors. They hold up pretty good. Just don't go cheap. Get a name brand. Make sure the pilot shaft is correct size when ordering. I have Weiand Team G on mine. Edelbrock is a good one too. Let's see what the others have.

Chrome thermostat necks are geneerally made of pot metal. They corrode and then leak. Get a cast iron or steel one chromed, or by a polished billet stainless neck. As for the waterpump, I agree that you need to go name brand. Just remember name brand bling costs $$$.

I just replaced a bright shiny Mr Gasket chrome thermo housing - because it is pot metal and will not last long, less than 2 years. I now have a billet unit.

Should be fine just keep in mind chrome retains heat, and doesn't dissipate like aluminum. I doubt enough to make it run hot however.

I purchased a polished aluminum water pump from Edelbrock and have been pleased with it so far.
It looks good, it's easy to clean and most importantly, it works very well.

Notice, I didn't use a chrome T'stat housing.

The only problem with chrome accessories sealing well is that the smooth chrome surface [where the gasket mates] will not seal well...because it is too smooth for the gasket to get any 'bite' into it. You have to rough-up the gasket surfaces with some 250 grit sandpaper (in multiple directions, please) so the gasket can do its work. Also, stay away from RTV or silicone sealants where fuel or antifreeze is involved. Use a thin wipe of Permatex gasket sealer on each side of the gaskets, instead.

I have a chrome B&M transmission pan on my Camaro and it leaked at first because of the smooth chrome surface, than I ended up dropping the pan and sanding the mating surface to try to stop the leak. I think I must have missed a spot since it still kind of leaks when filled up all the way.

Thanks guys for the input, decided to get right to work this evening and remove the pump,
found the bottom of my radiator looks bad, so i am looking at a new water pump, radiator,
general cleaning, then a light bulb went off "cam change". probaly not at this time but i do have a leaky oil pan gasket so it might be the time to pull the pan and replace rear seal and pan gasket. Thanks again.
