I pulled the air filter cover off and found a black mesh acting as the filter. How can I dtermine what filter to buy?
It is a stock 327 with a Carter 4 on it.
The filter is only about 1 1/4" tall
If the filter you have is properly fitted (air must flow through it....not around it...to get to the carb), just take it to the auto parts store and match it up with one they have there. It doesn't matter what car the box says it's for; just so it fits your air cleaner well.
If that filter if a foam rubber material, it would be best to change it for a paper element. Foam rubber can easily catch fire if your carb backfires. That is not too nasty if the element is inside a metal filter housing; but if it is exposed, a blazing filter element can start 'the big one'.
