My blinker indicator inside the tach will not shut of. Even with the car turned of the light stays on. Any ideas on what would cause this? I'm assuming it's a ground but I cant find it. The strange thing is that the blinkers still work.
Thanks
Scott
In my opinion....it is NOT a ground problem.
Questions/Suggestions:
1.) Are there any other lights that shine when the turn signal light is shining?
2.) if it is the ONLY light that is shining...even with the ignition off....how bright is it in regards to when it operates correctly? (barely glowing, dim or bright, etc)
3.) Make sure that your hazard switch is not pushed in.
Disconnect the turn signal connector (under the steering column)and see what happens.
If the light goes out...the problem may be in the turn signal switch and or a possible hazard switch issue....due to the hazard lights work with or without the key being on.
The problem is a power supply issue. That light is getting 12+ power from somewhere and causiing the light to shine because the light socket is ALWAYS grounded. And if your gauge lights work correctly...thanit is not a ground issue. The ground wire can be easily checked because it is attached at the bottom of both gauges and can be checked with a test light/volt-ohm meter .
Thanks for the suggestions. I have not even thought about it being a problem with the hazards. Now I have something else to look at. The light is brighter then the others and even more with the ignition off.
Thanks again DUB. I think I can figure it out now with your input. I had know idea on what else could cause the problem
Which car? I'll assume your '77. Basically, all cars are designed so that the emergency flasher system will work under any circumstances (engine OFF, no key...), so the fact it won't turn off is not a particular problem. However, it is most likely that the E-switch (on your steering column, I believe) is either pushed IN or the switch has failed in the closed position. The flasher unit for that is plugged into the fuse block [at least, it is on my '71]. You can just pull that unit out and the lights will stop flashing and turn OFF. You then need to find out what's wrong with the flasher switch.
P.S. The flasher can fail in the ON position, but in that situation the lights would not flash...they would just stay on all the time. I think your problem has to be with the E-switch.
I just wanted to thank everyone for pointing me in the right direction for my blinker problem. I spent many hours before posting the problem on the forum and all it was was a $20 part and a 30 second fix. I replaced my hazard switch and everything is working like it should be. Thinks again.
