Anyone know what kind of paint they used for the interior, and what i mean is the upper steering column cover is painted. I want to repaint mine. I assume a body shop supply would have this and the paint codes?
Vinyl/plastic parts get colored with vinyl dye or elastomeric recoloring agent. The best one to get is SEM "Color Coat"; buy it at professional auto body paint supply stores. They can mix it to the interior color code or to match a piece you bring in.
Metal parts are best colored with paint. But, I have used SEM "Color Coat" on more than one metal part and it seems to hold up pretty well.
I painted my steering column and hard trim interior parts with paint from MidAmerica. You can buy primer, color to match your interior, and a semi-gloss clear to finish it of with. It comes in a spray can and matched my interior perfectly.
word of warning about that stuff, it will turn out awful if you dont follow the instructions. I tested out some i bought on a piece of vinyl i had. I decided to see what would happen if it was applied too thickly, it instantly fish eyes like crazy. And it wasnt all that thick. I think it says you apply three very light coats, and then wait 10 min, and repeat. It is not kidding.
other then that the stuff matches perfectly, has held up, and looks awesome.

If by "they" you mean at the factory, this is it.
Vinyl,( and some plastic), were originally produced in a particular color. Knowing that supply wouldn't last forever, interior paint,(elastomeric),was developed to serve the need for touch-ups, and more importantly, to sell over the counter since once the stock of a solid color vinyl was no more, all over the counter parts,(usually black), were sold as ,"color to match".
There are different sheens for different parts.
A good auto body supply can hook you up. I doubt you'll find the dupont variety, since once the tints were gone there were no more to be had. SEM appears to be the go to replacement as stated above.
