This is a pretty amazing story
IMO, the pushrod fell for some reason in the oil pan, then it was hit by a piston or by a crankshaft counter weight and pushed through the oil pan...
You'll probably find pieces of a broken lifter when you remove the oil pan...and perhaps many other surprises...

What really surprises me is the condition of the rod, it looks like a normal used rod, not one that went through a lifter bore, got hit by something with enough force to propel it through the side of the oil pan and not have a scratch on it ?

As someone said way earlier in the thread; It's like the magic bullet all over again.

The pushrods are made of hardened steel and the oil pan is made of ductile basic steel,
so this could explain that, but no one can tell until oil pan is dropped...
The OP may find broken pieces of camshaft too...

I thought he must have been in a movie or TV show because that's him, I'd like to tear a strip off him if I had the chance, imagine remembering a nightmare for 45 years
I don't think I could get a rod from the cam gallery to the pan on purpose! Any chance the engine builder left one in the oil pan by mistake and it finally got sideways and pushed out. I also wonder how it could come out through the pan and hit the ground without being beat up in the process. This is sure one for the "you ain't going to believe this but book"! Can't wait to hear the Paul Harvey version after he gets it torn down.\\
After I wrote this saw the photos with valve covers removed. Would really like to see with intake removed! I have picked up pieces of a crank from a drag strip and had rocker studs pull out but nothing like this one!
