Default TH400 no movement - initial thoughts

72 SB, auto project has been on going for about 2 years now. I've got the motor running and brakes on and moved to transmission. here are the symptoms:
1. Car starts no matter what "gear" the linkage is in
2. The linkage is hooked up..at least i see the shifter moving with the pan off
3. Wheels do not spin when vehicle off and in any selected gear (apparently cant find neutral)
4. Wheels do not spin with vehicle running and in any selected gear
5. Currently flushing the tranny fluid via the cooler lines as the previous fluid was a nice sludge. Slowly but surely the fluid is turning red and flowing smooth.

Other than the cooler lines, everything seems to be hooked up with the exception of a electrical connector on the drivers side (safety switch?) I thought the vehicle wouldnt start without the safety switch?

I originally bought the car with the half-shafts removed; thus being able to move the car off the trailer and around the garage. Wheels obviously moved fine with nothing hooked up. After refurbishing undercarriage, i hooked up the half shafts and Wala, no wheel movement.

I understand this is a huge question and there are probably more details i am not providing however i am looking for a starting point. where should i start to get the wheels turning...i am this close to actually being to drive this car! (at least in the driveway as i have no interior yet)

If you have no history on that transmission, there are two possibilities: 1) the shift cable linkage is not restrained properly so it isn't turning the shift shaft properly; 2) the clutches inside are 'toast' and there is no longer any 'neutral' to find.

It should only start in neutral position. Since it starts in any position, either the 'neutral start switch' has been bypassed or it is defective. That switch is located at the base of the console shift lever mechanism.

I am looking for areas I can troubleshoot on my own. If all else fails I'll pull the tranny for rebuild/replacement.

So the switch could be a culprit? Wasn't sure in my particular case but it seems like a good starting point. What is the connector on the drivers side of the pan?

That connector is for the kick down, it goes to a switch at your accelerator pedal.

It should roll in any gear position except park. Sounds like it's not shifting out of park.
