I'm in the process of diagnosing an intermittent stalling problem. As part of the process, I've disconnected the Mallory 6AL ignition box and reinstalled an HEI 4 pin module bought from NAPA. The car will fire up, but will not idle and it acts like the timing is retarded (carb backfire). At 10k RPM it sounds normal, but below that is an immediate stall. When the Mallory unit is re-installed, all is fine again.
Does the ignition module effect timing? The car was tuned with the Mallory box. Is the NAPA module faulty? I'd like to carry a spare module as a backup.
The NAPA module was faulty. Put in a used GM part and it's running better. Haven't had the intermittent stalling... yet. Another issue popped up which will be a separate thread. Thanks all.
