What carbs are some of you running and how do you like them. I've been using my original Quad for almost 30 years now but it is getting to be a bit of a pain. The last two times I took it apart for cleaning I have had a hard time getting the right kit. I've lost track of what power piston spring I originally had in it and accelerator pump isn't the right one and sticks at the top of its travel sometimes. I have no tags or numbers on the carb so I buy what I can and use it. Always enjoyed working with the QJ but now cann't seem to keep it consistent and getting tired of issues and the top air horn gives me fits to seal it when I take it apart till I refit it about 5 or 6 times.
So thinking of another make/model. can you tell me what your running and how ya like em?

There are no tags on a Q-Jet. The carb number is stamped into the carb, and carb kits are readily available for all Q-Jet carbs through NAPA and other sources. Use the correct accel pump as outlined in my posts here on this Forum and there is no problem with keeping a Q-Jet running.
If you feel a need to replace it with another make and model, use whatever carb you are comfortable with tuning. With a few exceptions noted in my posts on this forum, most carbs of a given cfm size will perform almost identical to any other carb of the same size once properly tuned. Be aware of carb/manifold interface problems along with linkage and fuel line issues when swapping carbs. Few carbs will outperform a correctly set up Q-Jet on a mild street engine, and there is little need to disassemble and clean a Q-Jet more than once every 10 years.
thanks guys. Lars I agree with you and the sentiments of the others. I always liked the QJ, and kept it because I wanted the engine and accessories original and because I wanted to prove to all the nay sayers that I could run strong with the QJ when all they bragged about was their Holleys. Having said all that, I am still getting frustrated with my carb. For one thing, my main body has no numbers on it. I know that's weird but its true. I have about 3 other QJs that I've collected just in case I need them and they have numbers on there sides abeit different numbers. So just last month I sat at the counter of the local NAPA and picked numbers from his book and had him bring out about 10 different kits. I bought 3 of them. then went home and put my carb back together. I took the carb apart because I tend to get some blow by build up in the venturi and on the plates because my engine is alittle old and tired. I wasn't going to change my accel pump because I didn't think it needed it, then at the last minute i put one in from one of the kits and didn't check it much. Now the accel is sticking just a touch at initial off idle. If I change the link rod to the back hole it will keep the accel down below the point where it sticks but then I don't get enough of a shot to get it started sometimes.
Your remarks are encouraging to tell me to stick with it and make it right, ....but I don't know, I might be getting alittle old for this.
