Default Steering box adj. Screw

I am trying to remove screw on top of steering box on 1969. I have already gotten retaining nut off but screw will not budge. I have soaked with wd-40,liquid wrench and royal purple spray lube. I have broken tip off large screw driver, 2 screw driver attachments on craftsmen socket wrench and it wont move. Does anybody have any other good ideas? Thanks

The short answer (i think) is that it will not come out. It is an adjustment screw and not meant to come out.

I'm sure someone else will chime in and there are MANY threads about this adjustment so if not try a search.

Is there another way to check the grease in the steering box? There seems to be a seepage on the bottom and i would like to look inside. It does not look like it has ever been opened up. The 3 bolts on the cover plate are froven also and i dont want to put to much pressure on them and snap them off.

The top cover has to come of with the adjusting screw as a unit. Bottom of screw slips in to a slot.

That screw does not come out. If you want to add grease to steering box, remove one of the side bolts that holds the cover on. Buy grease from GM. It comes in a tube that can be inserted into the bolt hole to fill the steering box.

Hi
I learned vette boxes from the best out there. The lash screw is used as a jack screw to remove the cover. You will then have to readjust the lash because now you moved it. This is important as overadjustment here will wreck the gears. Any quality sythetic grease will work. The method of adding through the cover bolts is a shot in the dark, you could over grease it and then you'll have a leak for sure. The best option if you need grease is to remove the box, clean, grease and adjust it. If it's old then you might as well rebuild it. Again this info is from the best and it sure worked on my box.

It's amazing how much caked up old grease you'll find in the corners and a large void with none where it's needed.

...which is why you can add grease without worrying about the caked up stuff. You just need to be certain that there is some 'air space' at the top of the box so that heated grease can expand.

The steering box is NOT something that the weekend mechanic can 'play' with...UNLESS you read up on how it works, what's in it, and how to set it up. Jim Shea's papers on the C3 steering system are a good source for that info.

I already have a rag joint that i was going to replace this winter so maybe ill just rebuild the steering box at the same time. I did read an old thread that it was much easier to get the steering box out with the motor out so ill see just how hard it is with the motor still in the car,i dont plan on pulling the motor to get the steering box out. Thanks for all the info.

The box is much easier to remove with the left-front wheel removed.
