I fought and fought a leak on my TH350. Finally fixed it by using thick rubber Felpro gasket and tapping down the sealing surface. Place your pan on a flat surface and hammer the flange edge where the mounting holes are until it's straight/flat. I guess from tightening the bolts that the flange got a little distorted around the bolt holes over time. I also had a few stripped bolt holes that I repaired with helicoils, so you may have him check to make sure all the bolts are tight and if not, repair them. Hope this makes sense and helps.

EDIT: Also, do you know where its leaking? Mine was also leaking at the base of the dip stick tube . . . had to replace the O-ring.

I would make sure that the transmission is cleaned off of the old fluid and then lay paper under the transmision and see the area where the fluid leaking. Many times the shaft seal leaks and the dip stick tube leaks where it goes into the case and it runs down around the oil pan making you think that it's leaking

I'm not sure where it's leaking just that it's alot of fluid. It's right before the drivers seat at least 1 ft puddle.

Another idea would be to clean tranny real good and put UV dye into trans fluid, then use black light to see where fluid is leaking out. Most auto parts stores should have the UV stuff.

That location would indicate a leak in the power steering system. Your best bet would be to take the car to Wal-Mart and ask them to put it on the lift and find what/where it's leaking. There are many sources for leakage on an automatic tranny; the pan gasket is just one of them. There is no way we could advise you without putting it up and looking at it. Unless you take the car to a shop that is extremely busy, I doubt that they will turn you down.

P.S. Stay away from the tire & muffler shops. They L-O-V-E to see the ladies bring in their malfunctioning vehicles. If you go to one of them, you won't be leaving for less than $300.

There are several places for transmissions to leak. Pan gasket, speedometer gear, cooling lines, filler tube, rear seal, front seal/pump. You really have to get it up on a rack, clean it, and see where it is actually coming from.

Default this car is driving me nuts!

I'm all ready to take the car in this morning and I checked the tranny level to see if I needed to add before I drive it down and it's sitting right where it should be on the high mark. Could it be when my ex changed the gasket that he overfilled the tranny fluid and it leaked the excess?

I doubt if your ex overfilled it that much. Did you check your power steering fluid like 7T1vettementioned? Same fluid.

did you warm the car up, place the shifter in each forward gear position and reverse, place it back into park and check the fluid with the engine running on a level surface?

Default shifting

It was level, warmed up and running. Didn't do the shifting action.

It is possible that the unit was overfilled. But, unless the engine/tranny was working hard, I doubt that it would have 'puked' any oil. I'd still suggest that you take it somewhere and have them put it on a lift and look it over.

Could be coming out of the seal where the shift rod goes into the side transmission. That would be in the vicinity of the front of the driver's seat.

It doesn't take alot of fluid to make a puddle that size, that said, if it were the transmission on the drivers side of the car, the shift linkage is the only piece that goes through the trans housing. On the other side (I believe the 82's have a 700 as the factory trans) there is the servo, cooling lines and the dip stick tube. There's also the front and rear seals. The pan gasket could make a puddle anywhere, the front and or rear seal would make a mess in the middle of the car, unless it's really bad, then it gets all over the place as your going down the road. Still when you park the car, it should puddle in the middle front or rear depending on the seal. There really isn't too much that would make it leave a puddle on the drivers side. So, like others have suggested, I'd really look at the power steering. If that's full, can you give us more information on the puddle? Like is it at the front or rear of the trans, using a paper towel, what color the fluid is, (could even be oil from the oil filter), and is the under side of the car wet with the same fuild?

The 82 CE I am working on leakedfrom everywhere on the transmission. The pan was the major leaker but as said above the shift seal was toast when I pulled it out. The front seal was OK as was therear seal but all others needed replacement. I'll bet you have more than one area leaking.
