Default Calling all Fiber Optic specialists!

ok, searched as many threads as possible but still have this question: My front F/O lights are bright on the high beam setting, slight on regular headlights and dim on the markers...I have cleaned the lamp endpoints, replaced boots you name it. I am now ready to unwind the harness leading to the console plate since I was able to get a new plastic bracket. I have noticed the rear optic lens has brass fittings that remove easily....the fronts seem to be "affixed" into this black bracket/housing....is that the case? Are these going to have to be snipped and new brass fittings put on and then reinserted in the new bracket? My intenytion is to clean the ends and repalce the 40 year old warped plastic bracket.

Hi R71,
You mention cleaning the 'lamp' endpoints.
Have you cut a tiny slice of each end of the fiber optic cable itself in order to get a fresh point to gather and transmit the light?
Regards,
Alan

Thats my desire, but my question is how to remove the ferrule in the front bracket/harness assembly -or are they in their permanently? The rears slide out easily. I gently pulled on one lead in the front black plastic bracket and it didnt budge.

They come out (without breaking) with a bit of persuasion. It's been a while since I last removed some, but I believe you want to push from the front rather than pull on the lead.

will try..whats the worst thing can happem? I will snip them anyway if they dont come and re-ferrule them since I found a plastic bracket to retape into the harness...thx they feel stuck in there good. I may cut through the harness bracket as to not damage the leads since i do have another plastic bracket. As a sidenote, I keep hearing about a small piece that connects the headlamp to the fiber optic "sleave" that is often missing that if gone can dissapate light...where do you get those?

The glass fiber cable is pretty tough if you pull in a straight line. If you twist or bend the optic cable, it can break strands and destroy the light carrying capability.

Email me your mailing address and I can send you 3 ferrules. They are crimped on like an electrical connector. I think I still have a bag of these around from my Camaro days.

Have you cleaned the console lens? They can get crudded up with age. Try that and you may not have to dive under the console.

I stumbled on this old thread and saw that you knew about these ferrules. I am redoing my FO cables and need two of them. Can you please tell me if you know the part number of these? Are they GM available? I've looked all over and can't find them loose. Many thanks.

Oh no! Another forum member who replied to a thread that is over 45 days old contrary to arcane forum rules. Shame on you. But I doubt you'll get a PM from the mods pointing out the error of your ways and putting you on notice that a further infraction will incur posting privileges being revoked. It seems I'm the only one that gets called on the carpet for a first offense. Cause some SOB decided to squeal on me.
