Default Intermittent ignition problem

The 350 engine in my '79 cut off and would not restart. It had no spark at the plugs. After checking everything I could think of without finding anything wrong I tried restarting it and it fired right up. I changed the HEI cap and coil and it did it again. After checking everything it started right up. While I have the no spark condition, I do have juice at the red batt wire going into the distributor but not at the plugs. It is a brand new distributor also. Right now it seems to be running fine but I need to find out why I was not getting fire to the plugs in case it happens again while I'm on the road. Any ideas?

i would get a spare 4 pin igniton module (under the rotor cap) and try changing it out. my 79 did the same once, but the second time it quit completely while it was running. had to change the module in a store parkinglot. good luck.

When it happens again, check other electrical items to see if it is a 'global' problem (no power anywhere) or limited to the start circuit. If limited to the start circuit, it could be a bad Neutral Start Switch, an intermittant ignition module in the dizzy, or a power wire feeding the dizzy (or inside the dizzy) that has a "rub-through" and is grounding out on a metal part.
