There is a port with a rubber hose attached right below the top split line of the carb(front of carb) that is routed over the D/S valve cover between the engine and the inside fenderwell and is not connected to anything.
Any and all comments and suggestions are welcome.
Perhaps it is a carb vent of some sort but there is nothing to attach it to. Seems as though the PO has removed the vapor canister FWIW.

Hi Mike,
On earlier cars that hose runs to a nipple on the charcoal canister that gathers vapors from the gas tank and sends them through the carb. It's mounted on the fender apron that's behind the front wheel.
I'm not sure if 78 cars still have that canister?!?
Any sign of it?

i would think thats giving you a bigger vacuum leak then just venting into the cansiter would. is the car running well? how about when you plug the line does the idle come down at all?
agree with 1nicecorvette - If it's not plugged, it should be.
"there seems to be no difference in performance whether it is plugged or capped off" - not sure if you mean plugged with the hose on or capped off at carb.
AS long as it's one or the other, you wouldn't really see a difference - it's it's hanging open or uncapped you would have a noticable vacuum leak.
Either way, if it's hanging free, I'd remove the hose and cap the port on the Q-jet.
