Default 69 coupe, Ignition ideas

Ok so here is the low down. I ordered a new ignition lock and key, read a little how to on replacing this. The one that I had, would not let the key come out of the ignition, and would not turn to the lock position, this is why a replacement was needed. Anyways, the how to I read was no help, I got impatient and basically beat the ignition lock out. Once the lock was out I saw exactly how I was suppose to remove it. Well now the housing for the lock, turn signals, etc. Is all busted to crap, and I cant get the new ignition lock to lock into place.

So my question is, does anyone know if I can bypass the ignition system, and put a toggle/push button start in? I haven't found any of the ignition lock housings for sale, and I dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new steering column. I'm pretty good with electrical wiring and such, but most of the how-to's on this require the ignition lock to send power to the ACC.

Outside of the obvious mistake I made in losing my temper I now need to fix this on a somewhat limited budget. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Just unbolt the ignition switch from the column, put a drywall screw in the slot that the relay rod came out of,to start engine push drywall screw,to get ACC ,pull drywall screw.

That sounds simple, however, is there a way to bypass all that?

So you are saying rig a push button, as normal, and push the drywall screw to get acc, then push the button, then pull drywall screw?

I'm looking for like how the rat rods are built, with a engine kill switch, and push button start.

The relay rod? Is that the rod that runs the length of the steering column? Or is it accessed through the ignition lock hole?

I was being a smart azz. Would a 68 style ignition switch be more to your liking ?
You could even add a push button start to it.

Hi Mike,
The sad part of this is that more than likely the ignition switch was fine.
There's an 'interlock' that won't let the key be taken out until the trans is in reverse. It operates with a cable, which probably needed to be adjusted.
I'm sorry, but I don't know enough about the ignition wiring to help you rig something up. I'm sure someone else will though!
Regards,
Alan

Next time you run into a problem, post the symptoms on the Forum and let the collected knowledge of the participants help you understand what is happening and why. The 'fix' is usually a whole lot easier of you know what is going on than if you guess. Sorry.

Yeah, I know I should have done this.. It's too late now I suppose(unfortunately). I figured a new lock is cheap and it would be an easy fix to just replace it.. I got rapped up in the moment.

As for the 68 ignition.. Was that on the dash? That would work too if you know how I could rig that up..

Won't be much rigging once you mount it,wiring is pretty much the same.

OK, I didn't see any ignition wires inside the steering wheel. I'm still in the process of wiring the car. What am I looking for (as far as the ignition wires are concerned)?
