On the passenger side, on the front of the engine, where the head is mounted to the block, there will be 2 sets of numbers. There numbers will tell you where, when, and for what application the engine was built. One of the numbers will also end in the build sequence number for the car. Your VIN also ends in the build sequence number. So, if they match, that is the engine that your car was born with.
Your transmission will also be stamped in this way, I'm not sure where the stamp is for your transmission.
Hi US,
On my 71 the 4-speed is stamped on the passenger's side flange of the main case, just in front of the tail piece.
2 gang stamps like the engine pad, 1 a date and trans ID, and the other the VIN derivative.
I believe the the same VIN gang stamp was used so any peculiarities in the stamp should appear in both places.
Regards,
Alan
A VIN derivitive is stamped on the engine, the tranny, and on the frame in two places. The assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows where the locations are. Order the AIM. You're going to be wanting it for other things, anyway.

First position shown. The workman would then move to his right and stamp the frame again just in front of the #4 body mount.
On my 78 Borg Warner 4spd it's located on the driver's side. From bottom to top it reads WD2182 (warner april 21 78 2nd shift) and from top to bottom is the vin number. Yes the area has been cleaned since this pic :
I just replaced the frame fron the front door posts all the way back on my 68 vette- after the body was pulled off there were no vin # 's stampped on the original rotten frame on the drivers side rails.
This was the original frame on the car- canser holes every where.
When did they start stampping the frame with the vin#?
