Helping a fellow Corvette owner install a 200R4 in his vette. When he tried to remove the arm from the shifter shaft coming out of the trans, the shaft snapped. Since neither one of us know anything about automatic transmissions, how big of a problem is it to remove and replace this shaft and is a shaft available online? Trans is already installed in car.
Any and all info appreciated.
You'll have to pull the pan, and the valve body to get that shaft out. There's a nail (yup an actual nail) that's used to hold the shaft in. I'm not sure if you can buy just the shaft, (what the heck were you doing that snapped the shaft?!?!) new, but you might be able to buy one if you can find a bone yard or place that provides trans cores. You might try some local trans shops too.

Thanks for the info. I wish I knew what happen. I was in the car, shifting between gears and he was under adjusting the linkage, when all of a sudden he yelled - OH sh?? or something like that. Seems the 200r4 transmissions have pretty much dried up as we are having a problem locating a shift arm.
Unfortunately, you don't have to remove the shaft to replace the seal. All you have to do is remove the nut on the shift shaft to release the lever connected to it. Anyway, you will not know what damage is done until you drain and remove the tranny oil pan. And then you are left with working on the valve body. Good luck...and please don't let 'Bubba' touch your car, again.
P.S. My 'guess' is that your buddy tried to remove that nut without holding the shift lever to keep it from moving. Not good...
