I don't know what you mean by 90 degrees apart.

Don't worry how they are when installed. They are constantly changing as you go around corners. They spin at different rates when going around corners. This question is asked about once a month and the answer is always the same. Just install them and go drive. Check them later they will be in different positions.

The GM shop manual says that. Makes no sense whatsoever.

90 degrees apart from what....each other on their axis???
That makes no sense! They will change each time you make a turn.

Mike...

Can you give me the specific 'section' and 'page' where that reference is made? I want to read it myself to try understanding what context they could be referring to for "90* from each other". That's just wierd.

I just redid my rear suspension and ran into the same thing in my white/red Corvette shop manual. I called for advice from an old friend and got the same advice you've seen here. "Just ignore that". I slapped 'em in at far from 90 degrees and I've been driving all summer without incident.

Hope that helps!

could be a typo.they meant 180* apart so you don't put them both on the same side.

I understand that it was in most years, but I had my '73 GM service manual close at hand.

Page 4-42, Installation. Para 1, ........Rotate yokes so that trunnion seats are phased 90* apart. Figure 100- Axle Driveshafts on the same page also shows the 90* apart.

i think what they mean is, remember the old driveshafts that had the slip yoke that was splined and you could put it back together so it wasnt at 90 degrees. no way to do that on one with out the slip yoke.

I don't think so. They call for the 1/2 shafts to be 90 degrees out of phase from each other. That'll last about 5 minutes on the road.
Ignore it - or not - no matter.

Bob, it's in all the manuals - ignore it.

Even if you set them initially to be 90 degrees out of phase - as soon as you turn a corner the differential effect will allow them to move at will. If you understood how it works enough to be working on it yourself - this would be a self evident truth.

I rebuilt my rear end and didn't worry about the angle difference between the half-shafts. I've been driving it for a couple months and everything works fine. I agree with the other posts. Your half-shafts will rotate at different speeds, so the angle between them will change all the time. Good luck.
