Default Starter Problems

Last week the starter went out on my 79 L82 so I replace it with a new one and everything was fine. I started it 3 times with no problems and the 4th time nothing just like before it was replaced. I checked for power at the solonoid and there was nothing, so I went to the neutral safety switch and jumpered across the 2 purple wires and tried to start it but the jumper wire started to smoke. It seems like a short somewhere. Any ideas. The jumper wire I used was about 18 ga. but I don't see that as a problem for a short test.

18 ga. wire was likely not large enough to feed current to the starter solenoid. It has a pretty good sized coil on it, you know. Use a 10 ga. wire and see what happens.

I pulled the starter and will have it checked tomorrow. If it is good I will re install and try a heavier gauge wire. I have a new neutral safety switch on hand that I will try if nothing else works, but I don't think that is the problem.

If it was the 18 ga. wire that was smoking/getting hot, yes, that was the cause. You need larger wire to feed that starter solenoid.

I had the starter checked this morning and it is bad. So much for paying a premium price for a new instead of rebuilt. I will re install it this evening and hope that solves the problem. Thanks for the help.
