Don't ask how I did it, but while cleaning up under the hood, I broke the Temp Sending Unit located on the driver side of the block. I want to replace it but want to know, is it just a simple removal and replace? What's the chance of breaking it off and creating further problems? I really don't want to relocate it to the manifold as I like keeping that area as clutter free as possible. Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.
If you have enough metal left to get a solid grip on it for removal, it's a simple fix. You need to drain about a gallon of coolant from the radiator petcock before you remove it, so that you don't spill it out on the floor and make a mess in the engine compartment. If you drain it in a clean bucket (and it is not 'old' coolant), just reuse it when done.
Thanks all - quick trip to NAPA and new temp sending unit installed. These little 5 minute quick fix issues seem to turn into a total rebuild of some sort but not this time.
Removing and replacing the temp sending unit should be easy but finding a replacement unit with the correct resistance may be the hardest part.
Thats the problem I think I have!!! I just posted this question on the "General" forum. While putting my headers on, I broke the tabe for the connection. I went and bought a new one for 10 bucks. Now my gauge does'nt work. I tested the wire and it has power. What should I ask for or look for when I go to get another one?
Search for Temp sending unit. there are several threads outlining issues with gauge accuracy and replacement temp senders. Willcox and Roger have extensive threads on testing and tips for how to calibrate them. They are must read for accurate gauges.
I'm in the process of replacing this temperature sending unit but there doesn't seem to be enough room to maneuver between the headers, spark plugs and engine mount to loosen it up. Is there a special tool or wrench that you use to remove this sending unit?

You are 100 percent correct! Roger and I have banged around with these things for a long time. The dash unit can be calibrated to match a wrong sender but this is a real PITA.
The best suggestion I can give anyone is to find an original because NO ONE makes a correct sending unit that I am aware of and I’ve tried all of them.
Usually when the senders stop working it is from the oil drying up and the thermister (a resistance disc in the bottom of the sender) corrodes and stops making contact with the sender. If you cut the top out of the sender, remove the internal parts, clean them, add oil, re-assemble and epoxy the top back together you’ll get years of life out of it.
Your best bet is to find an original one working or not and repair it or your old one. The tops can be epoxy’d back on and the sender will work just fine.
On another note: I received a brand new batch from another supplier in for testing a few weeks ago but I’ll assume these will fail just as the others have and will post later. I’ll have to update this later.
Hi bac,
WELCOME!!!! First post!
I guess a little more info would help.... what car, what engine, what headers?
This thread was about the passenger's side sender.... since you mention the engine mount, are you struggling with the driver's side which is more directly above the mount?
Regards,
Alan
