Default Convertible smells

I have a 70 convertible, hedders, exhaust exits at rear, MagnaFlo mufflers. The exhaust fumes are terrible. Does EVERYONE in a convertible have the same problem? Do people with sidepipes have the same problem? Is there a fix? How can I check the other exhaust components to isolate the tailpipe as the only culprit. I have had this car in this configuation for a long time. Now it's capable of longer trips and my clothes smell like exhaust. Thanks for any help

Hi Shark, my wife hates the smell from the exhaust on my 70 vert. Doesn't bother me much, I try to keep above 60mph the smell only catches up with me when I come to a stop.

Hi 7d
Had the exact problem with my 69 convertible with side pipes. I tried everything from carb rebuild which helped slightly to dynamat under carpets to seal all holes etc. all of which none worked. Ended up removing the side pipes back to the rear exit and smell gone. Very happy as well because I gained an extra 23HP. At least my wife now drives with me. The problem could be in the jetting of the carb. Good luck.

Check your timing and your carburetor mixture.

You might have some crazy fumes at cold idle when sittin in your garage but after its fully warmed up and at good cruising temp you should not have excessive odor. My gues is the carb needs tuning. Maybe get an AF meter and really look into it !

Your probably running too rich....un-burnt gas (hydrocarbons) do smell.

If you want to kill the smell AND run sidepipes, run a couple cats.
