Default 68 shift plate damage

I have seen many posts discussing the cosmetic repair of the shift and instrument consoles. But I cannot find anything on the repair of damaged ones.

What do I do about pitting especially where the chrome is? Do I send it to a chrome guy and have him repair and chrome the whole thing, then do the painting, etc. myself? Can it be chromed? It is not steel.

How about the dents and dings, specifically where the shifter beat up the center console.

looking for any advice.

Hi aw,
Since the plate was originally chrome plated I'd think it could be re-done.
I would talk to someone at the chrome shop in person so they can see exactly what they're getting into and give you a realistic idea of what the results will be and the cost.
Are the places that need to be repaired mostly in the painted or chromed area.
Just how difficult to find/expensive are 68 plates?
Regards,
Alan

I would think it would be less money to buy another shifter plate or gauge cluster than to have them re-plated. But, check vendor prices and get quotes for chrome work and compare them.

Hi 7T1,
I think the 68 bezels and plates are pretty difficult to find. I know I rarely see them at Carlise in any condition. That's why I asked about the cost of very good condition/unbroken originals.

Alan

Yep. 68 plates are one year only. Not impossible to find, but difficult at times and pricey for a good one. Ditto for the gauge cluster - one year only.

AWilson: All the plates were flash chromed, then the black was painted. How badly dinged is your original?

If the OP doesn't really care if the cluster/shift plate are exactly like 'factory', can't he just use later vintage hardware?

Go over to the parts for sale section. Member 1960fi had a couple for sale. Not real cheap but not over prined IMO. I have bought parts from him and always as discribed. Contact him and I sure he will help.

Yes, but geez 7T, the 68 plate has the crossed flags on the tail piece. We 68 owners love our crossed flages.

I do want 68. Actually I have 2 of them. One is beat up form the shifter, the other is bubbling up from I guess corrosion. Can this type of thing be fixed? Is flash chrome different from the chrome applied to the bumpers?

Willcox has a shift plate too... Not new.. but I have one!

I'd have to check it to be positive... but I think it is great condition. Question... with or without a/c?
