After the cold adjustment success, my valve covers would have stayed on the engine.

I hear you on that but after all I have been through why do it half way. On the cold adjustment I had one valve that was loud and I was probably half-an-half on being right on and too tight on adjustment for the rest. So it was worth it.

Ya know, you may have an aftermarket cam in there which could be bigger than what came stock which may be why you can't get the idle down where you think it should be on a 250HP small block. That is if you're sure there's no vacume leak anywhere..... Just my 2cents here....
