On my 82 I think I have a vacuum leak, not 100% sure. Lights go up and down fine, but I swear I can hear what sounds like a vacuum leak and then it "goes away". I have a vacuum gauge, so (1) best place to check (2) what should it read at idle.. (3) will it change as the car warms up?
I had an 82 about 8-9 years ago... I fought "vacuum leaks" the entire time I had the car... How does your car run??? My headlights worked fine, but the throttle bodies would not tune up without "all" vacuum leaks fixed... I got it drive-able, but think it still needed a throttle body rebuild when I sold it...
The HVAC controls are operated by vacuum, also. If the sound you hear is when you are moving the HVAC controls, that is to be expected. If you are not changing anything, and you are hearing a 'hiss' in the car, it is likely in the dash area or in the transmission tunnel area with the controls. A consistent hissing sound should not be present in the car.

I was wondering if it could be by the HVAC controls.. The car runs, but idles pretty rough when you first start it up.. Once it's warmed up runs fine but I think the throttle bodies need to go out for cleaning. (Car was sitting for years..) When I did the heater core the dash and HVAC were all out, so I guess I should revisit that too just to be sure. Like I said the sound goes away after a few minutes.
find the vac line that goes into the firewall.it should come off the line in the back of the rear throttle body or the vac line off the intake .block it off and see how the motor runs and if you still hear the sound.
