I'll agree. Although I trust most anyone here (except those that aren't willing to put their OWN face in their avatars :D ) I think that having some sort of deposit would be good.

If Paypal is capable of doing that, I think that would be the best route. Set a value for each tool ahead of time and have a deposit made in that amount before the tool is shipped out.

I'm envisioning a table listing the tool, the condition, the tool cost, the approximate shipping cost, which member owns it, which member currently has it and an expected return date if it's currently on loan.

Establish some sort of refundable "core" charge for using the tool. This will insure that if the tool is lost, broken or stolen, the owner gets reimbursed for the loss of the tool. This charge doesn’t have to be the total value of the tool because tools wear out and someday they will break, maybe half of the original value. That would be fair for the owner and the user I think.

I think ups gives you $100 insur. free and above that it's pretty cheap, that would cover a loss in shiping :seeya

I think this whole thing could be run and dependent on the 'loaner' web site. As Dave mentioned, a value set for the tool and it's shipping cost should be entered initially with the registration of the tool. When a tool is requested and shipped out, the 'pay-pal' deduction is made by the sender for shipping along with the replacement cost of the tool, that being held as 'deposit' until return. I feel that replacement cost is only fair, being the amt that it takes to purchase a new one. Even though the tool may be worn or well used, the loaner shouldn't be stuck with any loss. When returned to rightfull owner, deposit is returned to acct. Look at the way that a typical rental place handles it, or for ex. Auto Zone. I think the only thing left is to find someone to build the website and try it out. Troy could include a disclaimer to relieve the forum of any problems. What say?!

I have a tool that I used once to knock the shock mounts out my trailing arms. It is in near perfect condition. Only about 6 or 8 hits total for both shock mounts.

It sounds pretty good so far. I made this a sticky thread to get more feedback.

I am having a redesign of the wesite done soon. The project starts on June 15th and will probably take 6 weeks.

As we finish that up I would like to get this coded. In the meantime we can continue to work on the ideas so that we have the best possible implementation when the time comes.

This the best post in weeks! This is such a great idea. I wouldn't mind to borrow several of my tools: coil spring compressor, HVLP spray gun, etc.

This wouldn't be hard to do. Using some kind of database to keep track of who owns what tool and where. Now members could find the tools by entering the tool name and a list of owners would appear, then the "needer" would contact the nearest "owner" (to save on shipping costs).

This way the owner coudl keep their tools and just borrow it when some body would need it. (a lot more people would borrow this way)

Good idea?

Paul

It sounds pretty good so far. I made this a sticky thread to get more feedback.
More feedback from the warped mind of Rod:
>I think a 'request column' would be in order for needed tools also. If someone needs a tool that isn't listed, they can 'sign-up' on the 'request column' requesting that tool. This will be a good way to build the inventory of needed tools also. A loaner could 'check-in' and register that tool to fill the need.
>A 'comment column' for description of the tool and its usage wouldn't hurt either. Not everyone is familar with all tools and their usage.
>Instructions for some tool application and usage. This could prob be enclosed with the tool. Even though it would be great to have this info 'on-line' for download. This would take the "where are the instructions?" outa the loop.
>A 'time envelope' option should be listed and set with each tool from the loaner. (maybe in the 'comment column') ex: I'm not using my torque wrench for the next month, it's avail for that period. But I do need it back by this date....
A little refinement on above: there can be a 'status column' listing. ex: This tool is checked as 'indefinate', as the loaner's willing to keep it in circulation.
It can go from one user to the next without the need to 'return home' each time. Check-in, check-out can be registered on the web site, along with the deposit/shipping $$ shifting from user to user.
I'm sure more structure and needs will surface as this thing gets closer to completion.... :D

Can we add a loaner body to the list.. Like when you need to do something that you don't know how to do and you don't have the tool to do it with. You get the tool and the person for a few hours..  I supose this wouldn't work cause shipping would be too expensive..

Great idea on the tools.. I think Pay-Pal is the way to go and include the purchase price for a new replacement tool. Condition of tools is going to be tough cause it's all judgemental. I just borrowed an exhaust pipe spreader or rerounder from my dad and I busted off one of the nipples while using it. I fixed it again but if you would have asked me before using it I would have said it was fine and in good condition. It's always a gamble when you borrow tools and I'm extreamly careful when I do cause you stand the risk of breaking it, spending the money to purchase the replacement and then your out the money and the tool.. but that's the risk.. the benefit is when they don't break which is what happens most of the time.. Respect for other people's property and honesty is what will allow this to work. :blueangel:

Got a couple tools I work with that I can loan to anyone and you can keep em if you want.

Sounds like a good program. Might work better for people who are close to each other and can just swing by and pick em up. I like the idea of a data base for both tools 'for' loan and 'needed for' loan.

I once belonged to a club that had a specialist tool loan scheme. It worked well & was really, really useful. The only times that problems occured were when a member would borrow a tool & then pass it round his circle of friends for their use (over several months) or occasionally a tool would get broken/damaged & then the :boxing would break out. A hefty deposit & black marks against any club member refusing to pay for damages solved that hiccup. Things wearing out due to normal wear & tear have to be allowed for & precision instruments need to have special conditions applied (I once saw somebody using a very expensive digital vernier as an adjustable wrench).
Obviously I'd be out of the scheme, but good luck in getting it off the ground - the only people who stand to lose anything are the tool vendors :)
Another option (dare I say it) is for the person borrowing a tool to pay a small charge ($1-00?) to a central fund/person/account/me! This cash can then be used to pay towards wear & tear of the donors tools or repair/replacement of broken tools (in case of no satisfactory outcome to a dispute) & (even better) it can be used to buy really exotic stuff eg. a 3 angle valve seat cutter set (not difficult to use but very expensive for somebody to buy for a couple of heads). Just an idea :)

I've got a gas welding torch and can weld up to 1/4" thick steel.
But you either have to bring it or ship it to me....

Oh and I can Anodize or hardcoat aluminum parts ( small feel for chemicals ) They must fit in a 5 gallon bucket.
