Default What could cause acceleration shudder?

Just got my engine running great again (stuck floats from jacking the front end up too high ) and took her out for a drive after changing the oil. Wanted to be sure I wouldn't have a problem with fuel getting down into the crankcase after my problem above.
Cruise was going well until, after she warmed up good, I started romping on her and got a wicked shudder which seemed to manifest itself by the steering wheel shuddering quite a bit. Tried it in first, second, third and fourth...all gears even at different rpm's would cause this shudder. Don't remember this from last year.
I am going to replace my rear struts as I know the bushings are pretty shot.Could it be this?
I've double checked tire pressure, all good. 33 psi all around. At steady speeds there is no shudder/vibration. Only on acceleration.
THANKS, Rog

Check your torque converter./trans fluid color?.

I don't think it's a torque converter, the OP said first, second, third and fourth gears. Unless there's been a swap, this is a manual trans. In could be a slipping clutch though. Could be a miss too. Fouled plug, bad spark plig wire, etc. Based on the limited information, I'd suggest checking the ignition system. Plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor and points. Check the firing order and timing too. Also, I find it hard to believe you got the front of your car high enough in the air for the float to stick. If the float did stick, I'd look for another cause. Is the carb still a Qjet or has it been changed? Also, unless there's been major modifications, you don't have struts either. The rear suspension has trailing arms that pivot on bushings in the frame pockets, and is supported by shocks and the rear spring. Bad strut bushings shouldn't cause a shudder under acceleration.

I'm guessing all that gas fouled some plugs. Time for new ones.

Hi Rog,
I agree that it seems like it's a fuel or ignition problem.
The reason you feel it during acceleration is because you're putting more of a demand for power under load on the engine. The rest of the time the engine is 'loafing' along.
Sorta like what your heart does when you're running or walking.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
