I am confused with what the NCRS is looking for on chrome bumpers. The brackets are to be black I think, what are the backs of the bumper to be?, flat chrome, or painted black ?, just starting the frame off on my 71 LT1, thanks Ron
Why not read the NCRS judging guide? Or ask on their technical discussion board? Seems to me that would be a better way to go. Not trying to be unkind by any means--just thinking that going to the right source would make more sense.

Generally good advice, but occasionally this forum has been frequented by NCRS judge(s), 70 - 72 team leader, and LT-1 restorer(s) and experts. You might get lucky here.
The best place to ask questions about NCRS judging is on the NCRS site obviously. Asking them here frequently has the undesirable effect of conjuring up anywhere from one to three of the usual bashers who do their best to hijack the post. That's a shame.
The backsides of the '68-'73 bumpers are unpainted and unpolished chrome. Pretty crappy looking, just like when they were new. Beware of triple plated show chromed bumpers, those will get a deduct.
Hi Ron,
Restoring an LT-! NICE!!!!
You're right in thinking the brackets were black; some degree of semi-gloss/semi-flat will do.
If you're having your original bumpers re-plated, (I hope you are), you can talk to the plater about what you want. I believe they understand that some restorers don't want the prep and buffing to be perfect.
Some people think that the term the platers use, "triple chrome plated", refers to 3 layers of chrome, but it in fact refers to the 3 materials used in the plating process... a layer of copper, a layer of nickel, and then the layer of chrome. The rear side of the bumpers have all three metals on them, but are un-buffed as Mike W. said.
How about a little info and maybe some pictures of your car?
Regards,
Alan
Thanks for all the advise. First I did read the NCRS guide, it doesn't really say much, except the chrome was fairly good, and the brackets are semi gloss black. The car I am starting on had the bumpers re chromed about 15 years ago, the job stinks in my opinion, you can see some sanding marks under the chrome, some of the back side is lifting, I plan on having them re plated for sure, I will check on the NCRS site for more info.
