The yellow wire on the solenoid should be hot with the key ON,grounding the blue clicks the solenoid.
Solenoids can get dirty and plug up and can be cleaned.
Is it attached to the tach housing ?
OK. Finally after a vacation and a week of putting this off, I crammed myself under the dash and pulled out the solenoid. I blew compressed air through it and checked it electrically and it seems to be working correctly/cleaned.
Here's where Im at; with fingers crossed the solenoid was cleaned and reinstalled. Now with engine on, Im getting sooo close. When I start the engine the door DOES NOT rise on it's own.
When I turn on the wipers, the door opens and the wipers wipe, BUT when I stop the wipers they cancel and go down, but the wiper door doesn't shut.
I have to be so close...
Any thoughts on this? After wiper cancel/shutoff how do I get the door to close back down?
When the wipers park they should be depressing the Interlock Switch which allows the wiper door to close. It's located in wiper trough passenger side. The 71 Chassis Service Manual gives a nice description w/diagrams.
If the door is not closing at all [when wipers are turned off], either the 'wiper parked' switch is defective or it is not being fully depressed by the right-side wiper blade arm. The door is supposed to stay up until that switch is 'made' and vacuum signal is sent to close it.
Ok thanx again for everyone's help maybe we can figure out my 76 headlamp problem. The Lights won't go up OR down from the headlamp switch. I have this sheet that lays out the 1976 vacuum system but Im confused why there's a "T" at point A. Is the left side of the T junction just open?
From the check valve one side should go to the T to the headlight switch and the otherside of the T should go to the wiper solenoid back of tach. The 2nd side of the check valve should go to the vacuum reserve tank (B). Is your vacuum reserve tank located in the nose of the 76? On my 71 it's located on the drivers side near the side grill. Anyway the 2 C lines seem to be the vacuum feeds to the headlight relays from the reserve tank. On my 71 the 2 vacuum feed lines travel along the drivers side from the reserve tank to the headlight relays.
The small white hose to the T connector which connects to the first port on each of the headlight relays is the control line.
Edit, I agree w/7T1vette as I don't believe there was a wiper solenoid in 76. I checked and the vacuum reserve tank is in the nose of the 76.
So last fall I had a complete working vacuum system on my 71 as described above. With all your help I finally had a C3 with working wipers and lights.
So I put the car in storage and took it out a week ago. Mind you, everything worked when I put it in storage. Now when I press the wiper button inside, nothing happens...
The lights pop up and one little quirk is the wiper door opens when I start the car, but after a little rev it closes. Im guessing the vacuum tank is filling?
So why now does the wiper system not work? Is it something simple Im missing??
Hi,
Does the wiper door open if you pull the over-ride switch?
If you open the door by hand and then use the switch, do the wipers work?
Regards,
Alan
Sorry for the delay getting back here.
I tried today and yes the wiper door opens with car in idle, pulling O-R switch. When it opened I pressed the wiper switch and no wipers. They worked before storage.
Is it possible the wiper switch is bad? I doesn't really real like it's engaging anything?
Is the wiper bezel a quick remove or do I have to remove the whole gauge cluster / shift console etc...?
All you need to do is go back to this thread from the beginning. I remember this thread from last year. Everything that you need to know on how to troubleshoot your vacuum wiper/headlight system is already in this thread. Role up your sleeves and dive in.
Oh, and search is your very, very best friend.
Good luck.

No think this is something else like the WW switch.
