Default steering rag joint

Atm i am in the proccess of removing the body.

5 or the 8 bolts removed. Front back bumper and some other little things.

Mount 1 and 5 i cannot move at all. 4 and 8 are rusted and will proberly cut them from inside with a dremel.

Seat beld bolts . Is that where it is bolts near the console / middle?

Also having problems removing the steering colum. Undid the 2 bolts that tighten the rag joint. removed the 3 bolts that hold the steering box to the chasis, but dont really know what i am doing there.

Any advice would be good

there are two bolts holding the two parts of the rag joint together, remove them use a long screwdriver to separate them , good to go.

You really don't want to pry on the steering column flange in order to gain the extra inch or two in order to seperate the flange from the flexible coupling. The steering column steering shaft is designed to telescope in a severe frontal collision. It will also telescope if you pry on the parts (or if the column is out of the car, dropping the column on the steering shaft.)

Now when you go to reassemble the steering column back into the car, you will find that the steering column shaft and flange no longer reaches the flex coupling. Also, getting the shaft back out to its original length is a lot harder than pressing the shaft into the steering column.

With the mounting bolts removed from the steering gear, now remove the nuts and lock washers from the shoulder bolts in the steering gear flex coupling. You should now be able to tip the gear so the shoulder bolts come out of the steering column flange.

The ragjoint flange bolts are 'captured shank' designs...meaning there is a shallow notch machined into the shafts and the bolt shank that actually retains the flange until it is completely removed from the flange.

if I read his thread right, he already has the gear box hangin loose , taking those two bolts loose and if he needs to , prying the rubber 'rag' away from the metal retainer will only allow his steering box to be removed . I've done this three times over the past couple of months, once with my borgeson conversion, and the other two times with friends borgy conversions, soaking with PB Blaster is good, but no issues.

got everything that i can read on the net here. Thanks for the help.

Except for the hand brake and the auto tranny connector. How is the best way to do this, from the side if i remove the console area around the hand brake, or under the car somehow?

everything done.

Now for the lift.

What is the best way in getting a strap under the body. Jack the body up in certain area's or something?

I am doing via a engine lift hoist.

I used straps with hooks and put the hooks under the METAL part of the rocker panel.

thanks. I had borrowed straps, but mine did not have the hooks.

One last thing about this.

Been searching for plans for a body dolly.

The best that i like is the on from

http://www.corvette-restoration.com/.../dollyplan.jpg

Would that need any modification for a 76 model in measurements?
