I just got my 79 L82 back from having the q jet re furbished. The car is still not idling well at operating temperature and when I shift into reverse and hit the gas to move the car it cuts out under load. There is also a "pulling back" on the open road at about 3500 rpm. Almost like a loss of power as I step on the gas.
I am thinking an ignition problem or maybe distributor cap? I read somewhere that the HEI module may be defective? Anyone else experienced this?
The ignition module (mounted inside distributor) is a common failure item after some years of heat/vibration/use. Any of the ignition components in the HEI system could cause your problem: cap, wires, plugs, coil (mounted in distributor cap), module. You also need to verify that your distributor has a good path to 'ground' so that its operating voltage is adequate.
It is also possible that your problem is caused by 'fuel starvation' from blockage/restriction in the fuel line path, filter, or incorrect float level.

In my experience the HEI module either works or it doesn't. Any time I have seen one fail, it resulted in no spark at all. Just about any other ignition component could cause the problem you are describing, though.
