Default Front Spindle

Im rebuilding my suspension and the spindles have me a little concerned. The spindle surface itself looks fine, but the machined circular area behind it has some pitting. Im talking about the area around the spindle, its verticle when installed on the car. Im not sure this area is critical or is an actual bearing surface, but it looks machined. Just doesn't make sense to me. So can anyone tell me if this is a critical area, or is it ok to have some pitting on it? Again, the spindle itself looks fine.

Spindle's and hubs are expensive and I dont want to replace if I dont have too, but I dont want to compromise safety.

The surface behind the bearing needs to be smooth so the grease seal will work. If your pitting does not touch the place where the grease seal wipes the spindle, you have nothing to worry about. Just smear a little grease on it when you put it all back together, so it won't rust any more.

Hi V-k
I agree that the radiused area from the spindle shaft to the flat area you describe needs to be in good condition for the inner bearing, but the flat surface itself isn't as critical since it only receives the large flat fiber washer and acts as a base for the rotor shield to be mounted.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like I need to replace them

They can still be cleaned up a little better, I havnt blasted them yet. But you can see what Im talking about in this picture. Underneath the tape looks great. the rest, not so much.

The area outside the tape is not a problem, just paint them up and put it together, that rust does not look significant enough to have compromised the strength.

That (semi) machined face adjacent to the spindle is just for cleaning up the face--making it a flat surface for mounting. As long as that surface has no protruding metal to restrict it from mounting flush with the mating part, there is no problem. There are no rotating parts that mate with the flange surface or the spindle. The wheel bearings actually run on their races, after they are installed on the spindle.

Before you "blast" the spindles, make sure that you protect the seal surfaces as you have the spindle proper.

From what I can see, they look to be OK. There is a felt gasket that supposed to go on the spindle before you put the backing plate on and it will cover up much of that pitting.

That diagram is really helpful! You will be getting an order from me before the weekend is up! Any chance you have any forum discounts before I submit it?
