I have been in Lars' garage many times watching him rebuild carbs. His secret is test running the carbs after rebuild using high test beer in the float bowls. That "fuel" will correct a multitude of rebuild errors.
A very Merry Christmas wish from Down Under to you all, and a Happy New Year.
I'm starting to plan a trip over there next year ( next month!!!) for either March at the Petersen Museum or June in Kentucky. I can't afford both, so which of the two do you guys think will be the better one to attend?
I sent my Q-jet carb out to Lars for a rebuild. I couldn't be happier with the results. My engine is basically stock other than intake and headers. I can already see that my mileage numbers are going to climb. She accelerates and idles so smoothly. It's like driving a different car. This is some of the best money that I've spent on this car. If your having carb problems invest a little money with this man. He has many tuning papers available as well. Very specific technical information that you can use.
What was the "turnaround time"? How long were you carb-less?
AussieJohn, good to hear you will heading this way again.
Are you flexible on your timing? I think August at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA is going to be something special next year. The Corvette's 60th will be celebrated, and it will be the featured marque for the "Historics". I think you have been to Kentucky a couple of times, so maybe time for a change. Haven't been to the Pertersen Museum, so can't comment of that. I hope to be in Monterey on Aug. 15, 2013.
Can I get an AMEN!!!!
I've had my '68 BB for a little over a year and never could get the bimetallic choke setup correctly. I was wondering why? I just couldn't figure it out
Lars took his time and sent me his tech articles and the shop manual
pics of various divorced chokes.
It was very helpful because I actually have a 1971 choke set up on a restamped quadrajet.
I was trying to make it work using a '68 choke rod.
Now it works as it should (for 1971).
It snaps shut on pedal pump and opens on warm up.
I'm still going to send him my carb over the winter for his magic touch.
Merry Christmas,
Marshal

Tony is one of several people who have been using my "Q-Jet Screening Service" for review of eBay & Craigslist carb ads: He needed a correct Q-Jet for his car, but was finding a bunch of junk. After sending me links to a few of the ads he was going through, we were able to identify a rough-looking carb that was actually a real gem: An all-original, untouched virgin Q-Jet covered in grime for under $100. The carb cleaned up and rebuilt perfectly, and tested out great on the run engine. He's now got himself a great-running Q-Jet that will run well and look "correct" on his Vette for a cost well under the price of an aftermarket, mediocre carb. Good job on the Carb-Quest, Tony!
Another Forum member who sent me a 1-ton truck Q-Jet yesterday also just found a great rebuildable 'Vette carb after reviewing a few ads. He'll now be able to donate the truck carb for parts and have a "correct" carb on his Vette for a very modest cost.
Amongst all the junk for sale, there are still a bunch of very good Q-Jets for those who want to sift through a few ads and recognize the good stuff..
Lars,
I wish I was more informed and used your aid and expertise before buying my ebay special.
It is what it is but I have faith that it is tune-able.
I doesn't look bad, hopefully it just needs to be sorted out.
Tis the season to "Believe"
Merry Christmas

Agree Monterey would be good this year as they are celebrating Corvette's 60th. But the dates are MAY 9, 10, 11, 2013. http://www.mazdaraceway.com/press-re...sports-reunion You can double check me by clicking on Calendar and arrowing over to May and you'll see it.
Then the following week, MAY 17, 18, 19, 2013, similar Corvette 60th celebration at Sonoma Raceway (was Sears Point/Infineon) which is just about an hour north of San Francisco. https://www.infineonraceway.com/tick...orts_festival/. If you're coming all the way from Down Under, AussieJohn, and you're hankering to spend some time in the West, these two events would be well worth the time.
Pete
Pete, the May dates are for the Le Mans series of cars. The Motorsports Reunion, formerly the Historics, featuring the Corvette is Aug. 16-18. The dates for this event have always been the second week in August.
Correct me if I am wrong on the date. Don't want to confuse the Aussies.
The promoters of the long running Monterey event moved to Infineon a few years back after not being able to agree on splitting promotional fees with Laguna Seca. In my mind the original event, now under a new name, is still the premier event. With all the auctions, Italian car events, tours, Pebble Beach Concours, nothing can compare with "The Weekend" in Monterey.
Ralph.

Couldn't have found a gem in the rough without Lars, he was more than willing to screen the links I sent him. I had no clue what I was looking for and would have bought some junk I'm sure if it wasn't for his willingness to help.

I'm sure we can save it. With your faith and my marginal skills, I see a great-running carb on your Vette..!

AussieJohn -
Don't listen to Ralph - he owns a Cobra, and has gone to the Ford Dark Side. He will disinform Vette owners and lead you astray. Come to the light at the Vette Viking Lounge where, you will recall, we have Special Margaritas just for Aussies...

You're absolutely right Ralph, the Corvette 60th celebration is indeed August 16-18. My apologies if I mislead anybody.
