If the lockup clutch was ON in low range or at low speed, it would be a harsh shift and/or it would kill the engine. L/U is only intended to be activated when the car is cruising in the upper forward ranges, with no brakes applied, and with low throttle. If a manual activation switch or other controller device can't follow those simple 'rules', the L/U clutch will not last very long.
The ECU ('81 & '82 Corvettes) is programmed to allow L/U only under those conditions and manages that clutch's operation. Folks who install a simple ON/OFF switch for their L/U clutch really can't get that job done right. I suspect a lot of L/U clutches 'bite the dust' because of that type hookup.
Match the trans to your rear gear. This article will explain it better than I can.I went with a 6spd due to less rpm drop between gears with my SB & 3.08 rear gears. If you've got a 3.55 -4.11 rear gear a 200r4 may be a better choice than a 700r4. http://700r4.com/faq/ratiocmp.shtml
