I'm freshening up the engine bay while I have my heater core out.
The black paint on my firewall has a bumpy texture to it is this factory or has some sprayed a rustproofing on it? What paint is correct?
Factory 'blackout' paint was just regular semi-flat or satin black paint. There was no "texture" in the paint. If all your firewall paint is pebbled/bumpy, someone has sprayed a pebbled coating on it previously.
Hi Barry,
I agree with 7T1 about semi-flat or satin paint.
Some areas of the firewall on my 71 have a texture molded into the fiberglass that's almost like 'leather'.
You can get an idea what the texture looks like from the upper left area in this picture. Are you seeing something like this?
It's by NO MEANS the whole firewall... it just appears on a couple of pieces that make up the firewall.
Regards,
Alan
Some folk swear by a Krylon Industrial semi flat black (1613?), I like John Deere Blitz Black. It is available both in fizzy cans, and in quarts/gallons. Same stuff either way... it is as durable as anything I have ever found which requires no hardener. Easy to apply, dead even gloss when dry and easy to touch up if you bugger something up during assembly.
Thanks for the input guys
I think my firewall has been sprayed with a rustproofing and other parts like the cover for the heater core are bare fiberglass.
The inner fender area by the washer bottle are also bare glass
