Warmed up, the oil pressure is about 65 psi. What would be downside or advantage to running 10W30 is the engine "is built for 20W50"?

Maybe I got two Old School builders in a row, but the last guy was exactly the same...run 20W50. Previous engine was a HR 427.
I'm in S Florida and run Mobil1 0w40 in everything.

OW-40 Mobil 1 is a true Group IV synthetic unlike other Mobil 1 grades except 5W-50 which is used in Porsches and other high end cars which is also a true Group IV synthetic-these grades are far superior to the standard Mobil I oils like 10W-30/5W-30 which are group III highly refined dino oils. The only downside to OW-40 Mobil 1 is that it has 1,000 PPM ZDDP if you are worried about a flat tappet camshafts. I use the 0W-40 Mobil 1 in my 2010 Z06 which I bought new instead of the Mobil 1 5W-30 recommended by GM. 0W-40 can be used in any temperature!

Another downside to Mobil 1 0W-40/5W-50 is that you can't buy it at Walmart in the 5 Qt containers, only by the qt-$6 each. Z06 takes 10.5 qts!!!

I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in my OEM 78 L-82 4 speed since it has 1,200 PPM ZDDP otherwise I would use 0W-40 Mobil 1 as well. the 15W-50 is a great compromise oil for the older motors! Good weather flow and excellent high temperature protection. Oil pressure is 60 PSI when cold in 40 degree weather and 50-55 PSI when hot.

I use the 0w40 in a flat tappet tow vehicle that gets some pretty hard use, especially in our heat down here.
I betting that the 1000ppm is sufficient, but of course can't tell till a teardown. Hopefully the superior lubrication of the Group 4 offsets the ppm.

Can't get it at all in Walmarts around here, but Advance Auto has a good sale on it about once a year.

I agree with your thinking on the 0W-40 in a flat tappet cammed engine but not willing to gamble with the L-82 so I use the 15W-50 with 1,200 PPM of ZDDP. The 0W-40 being a Group IV synthetic with 1,000 ZDDP is probably fine in your engine.

I can get the Mobil1 OW-40 at super Walmarts, not a standard Walmart in the 1 Qt containers for around $6-Guess I am lucky. Super Walmart also has the Mobil1 5W-50 in 1 Qt containers near me.

Just bought 2 5Qt containers of Mobil 1 5W-30 with a Mobil 1 filter for my other cars today for $33 for the 5 Qt container and Mobil 1 filter at Autozone. Have to go back to buy 10 Qts of the Mobil 1 0W-40 with 2 Mobil 1 filters (save 1 filter for a future oil change) for the Z06 this week!

Advance has a sale for 5 qts of 0w40 and a Mobil 1 oil filter for 34 bucks on sale.
Normally I don't get a 13 dollar filter, but this deal is pretty decent.

Wouldn't you think that 2 professional engine builders would know this?

Hi Iron_dog, I use the K&N HP-3002 for more capacity. But the HP-2002 would be fine for a stock 350. Also the Mobil 1 is a good filter but they are more expensive than the K&N here in Canada so I stick with the K&N.

If you're going to discuss oil filters, then probably one of the most important factors is the micron rating or degree of filtration you're after.
These vary quite a bit.

I've ordered the HP-2002, it's a stock motor "actually". Thanks eveybody for the support!
