My limited experience on "stock" rearends doesn't make me an expert. Because I don't even own one. But this being said: It has been my understanding that you never engineer parts that ware against each other out of the same material.
So the pin is super hard steel and the yoke end is the sacrificial part that wares away. I have rebuilt and worked on all kinds of posi units over the years and the cross pin is almost always perfect looking and the axles are ruined.
Something always has to give and in the past 30 some years my 79 broke, elongated, or cracked the posi case around the cross pin
You are correct, you never have parts with the same Rockwell hardness rub against each other. Something has to be sacrificial or you will have galling. OEM midyear stub axles rockwell around 25-30. As years went buy this number was reduced to 12 but I have seen them as low as 6 in 79's. New stub axles from a certain supplier rockwell 35-40. Toms cross shaft measures 53-55. There are some new stub axles on the market that are made from molten oatmeal and are case hardened. The splines will shear off the shaft the moment you jump on it. Cross shaft bolts almost never wear. If it is worn you have other issues and a new bolt won't help.
