The key phrase here is: "the rubber lines get old"

Temporary solution: Don't let the rubber lines get old. Replace them with new rubber fuel line, at least once a year. (I still have a similar fuel filter setup, going to an 1850 Holley. I replace the two short sections of rubber fuel line whenever I replace the fuel filter, which is every spring. I am working toward having a hard line with an in-line filter to the carb.) It's not an ideal solution, a hard line from the pump to the carb would be a lot better and safer, but until then, at least keep the rubber lines fresh, to minimize (but not eliminate) the danger of sudden, massive fuel leakage.

The chances of a fuel leak are pretty small. In the unlikely event of a fuel leak, the chances of it igniting are pretty small. However, it only has to happen one time to completely ruin your entire day. Please move toward getting a hard line setup from the pump to the carb. It's just one less thing to worry about.
