As long as you haven't messed with emmisions it will be ok. I have a 76 from out of state. Its considered 49 federal. It cleared CA smog requirement no problem.

motor vehicle which is at least two years old has been transferred to
an ultimate purchaser.
For purposes of this subdivision, the age of a motor vehicle shall
be determined by the following, in descending order of preference:
(1) From the first calendar day of the model year as indicated in
the vehicle identification number.
(2) From the last calendar day of the month the vehicle was

So you have a few options to get this car registered:
1. Find a DMV clerk who screws up and registers your car.
2. Have the seller put 2500 miles on it.
3. *assume* the car has 105,000 miles when you register it, since there are only 5 digits on the speedo (hey, maybe it does).
It's ridiculous, but I honestly can't see an exemption in the law for your case, no matter how stupid it is.

But what about that whole 7500 miles rule...
ugh,
spoke to Corvette Mike in OC they said its fine as long as it has all emissions equipment that it rolled off the line with and its all in working order...but I failed to disclose that it only has 5000 miles on it...
making more calls....
Yup, once you get the car initially registered it will pass smog no problem. My 78 has a cam very similar to an L-82 cam and passes smog easily. I've known more than a few people with late 70's L-82 cars in CA as well.

Yup just spoke to West Coast corvettes they said the same.
Also spoke to GM Downunder in Costa Mesa and they said that the 7500 miles rule doesn't apply to cars older than 10 years cuz it's 5 digit odometer....as long as it can pass smog....although I cant find that anywhere in writing.
My only concern would be that you'd have a paper trial saying the car had over 100k miles, but probably easily explained to the next buyer if the car visually and mechanically represents the claim.
Hey All!
I'm in California and looking to buy a 78 Silver Anniversary L-82 A/T from Maryland. 5,000 original miles!!! It has all original federal smog equipment installed. Will it be CA smog compliant? I thought I heard somewhere that all vettes were 50 state compliant but that doesn't sound right.
So I guess my question is will it pass smog in L.A. county and if not what do I need to make it pass...parts...cost...etc..??
thanks!
MLB
RESOLVED:
My 78 Silver Anniversary Coupe arrived and passed smog no problems! Now just need to do a title transfer and register with DMV and all is good!
PS: Shout out to Jeff at Flemmings Ultimate garage in Rockeville MD.

Thanks! I see you're in So Cal...
Do you know of any local, reliable, trustworthy (Ventura county, northern LA county/Valley, Malibu) corvette shops? Need some minor repairs done...(clock repair, power antenna just quit...)
