Well after around 2 years since my last paint job. I stopped at a store to get a soda pop. As I was walking into the store an old man was backing his truck out in front of me. As he kept backing and backing and backing, it appeared to me he was going to hit my car. So I was beating on the back of his truck and yelling stop, stop, stop. He didn't stop. Tore up the front bumper and cracked the right front wheel arch. So with at least 4 paint jobs on my car I decided to take her down to bare SMC. I have also installed a new L88 hood scoop and rpm intake. No hood issues with that now. I have a bout 80% of the car stripped and plan to put it in primer for now. With a repaint in the spring when it warms up, unless I can find a pint booth to borrow. I plan on changing the color a bit from candy red to brandywine as this not as maroon looking. house of kolor paint again.
I have a concern, which I believe may be to the excessive layers of paint previously done. The area right in front of the rear tires really took a beating and chipped a lot. Will this improve with fewer paint jobs under the new paint as before? What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

If you are painting a "candy" paint. You better strip it all the way down....instead of painting more candy on top of your candy paint now. That is WAAAAAYYYYY too much paint and you can have failures due to paint film thickness. Once you cross the line and use a candy for paint...it changes everything. Even when stripped all the way down to bare fiberglass/SMC...the candy can still chip due to the amount of material it takes to paint one is easily double that of a normal paint job that is basecoat/clearcoat. It is what is it....other than allowing it to cure VERY well...and then applying some of the clear plastic paint film offered today....that is about it.

3M usually makes some good products. Not sure if anybody has tried this one yet.
