Default Oil burner

Hi,

We have a small problem with 1971 SBC engine.

Peter did take his heads of the engine, and grinded the valves and seats, and gave it new oil seals.

Then he installed 1.6 rocker arms, and alu intake. But now the engine smok BIG time, why??

"High" rpm = a lot of smoke.

What is the problem?

Br,
John

If its a white, white like a steam and not a grey white, then your burning water. Since the heads were pulled, you probably have a coolant leak. If you have a coolant system pressure tester, you can pressurize the system to confirm it. You can also pull the spark plugs, spin it over to see which cylinder spits some water out the plug hole. Check the oil to see if water is mixing with it, you don't want to destroy your bearings.

It smells like oil, I don't think it is water, it doesn't smell sweet. And it doesn't use water But we will check.
Maybe it is grey white.......not black.

If it has an automatic transmission, the modulator valve on the side of the trans. could be defective causing trans fluid to be sucked into the engine thru the vacuum line.....it will make an oilysmelling whitish smoke.

Peter just call, he took off the hose, no oil inside the hose. He started the car without the hose attached to the modulator, still a lof of smoke.
So the modulator is ok ??

If blue smoke, it is oil. Especially, if it smells like motor oil. I got to point where I recognized the 'odor' as I sorted out my oil consumption.

White smoke is normally water/coolant but i have heard of trans fluid/oil smoking white also - even just dripping onto the exh pipes.

Each cyl in the block is surrounded by water and the oil return cavities in the heads are a lot further away from the cyls. Normally if a head gasket leaks it will use coolant long before oil. It only takes a little debre on the block deck or head surface to start a leak. Heads and block deck need to be squeaky clean before installing head gaskets. Clean enough to see the machine marks left on the block deck (but not remove any of them). Many head gasket require sealer too.

Peter needs to monitor his fluid levels and see where the source is. Removing and reading the spark plugs might help here.

Also can he see bubbles in the radiator (looking before it gets too hot)?

Hi,

Thanks for the input, I will tell Peter.
But it is a bit funny, before he took his heads of, is was "fine", it used a bit of oil, but if was nothing compared to today. I think I will ask Peter to take a Picture for you all to see.

Thx,
John

Well that's a "little" more smoke than what's acceptable

In the picture it looks blue to me? It's easy to smell if its burning antifreeze and the same with gasoline smoke. To bad smells can't be transmitted over the internet, right?
I'd start by removing the intake and see if there is oil in the intake runners (to check for leaky intake gaskets).

That is why we took some pictures, so you all could see the color.

The modulator seems O.K.

Now that the intake is removed, clean all the gasket surfaces......

then set the intake in place WITHOUT GASKETS.

Is any part of the intake or engine surface preventing the intake from sitting properly in place?

Do the intake gaskets look/measure to be thick enough to seal the gaps between the intake and the engine?

Can you post pics of the front/ rear/ left-side/ right-side/ gaps between the intake and the engine block with NO gaskets installed?

Check the compression of each cylinder and post the results?

known problem: if there is a leak between intake and heads, the vacuum sucks the oil from the crankcase. In your case there must be a really big leak.
