I just picked up some 3M Professional Grade undercoating for my frame off rest, does anyone have any experience with any type of undercoating? Recommendations/thoughts appreciated. thx in advance!
I used it looks cool but where the sun hits it, it turns brown Idk if its just me. But it looks real sweet when first done still looks good but as I mentioned some small areas are baked and on the frame it also discolored a tad.
I used undercoating on mine, but ONLY in the wheel wells. Here it will provide a sound barrier and distribute the impact of any road debris you pick up. I have seen where such an impact can put a star of tiny cracks in the paint on the top of the front fender.
I did not apply it to the frame or any metal surface where I was concerned about rust. Undercoating will continue to dry out, lose its flexibility and eventually form small cracks. Water will penetrate and the undercoat will actually hold it next to the metal - giving you the rust you were trying to avoid.
I used POR-15 (inside and out) on my frame and my birdcage. Hopefully this will hold the devil rust at bay.
Hi bmx,
I've used the 3M undercoating and spray some Krylon #1613 over it to keep it very black looking.
I've used it just sparingly in some areas of the wheel wells, and none at all on the frame.
Regards,
Alan
I love the stuff! Not only did I use it in the wheel wells, but I also use it on the frame (but only after you sand and coat with a protective enamel).
Here is a before photo. I sanded/ground down the frame, cleaned and then painted with a semi gloss protective enamel. After that, I used the rubberized undercoating. Not only does it add extra protection to the enamel, but the sound deadening is unreal.
Nice pics Jartanyon, thx everyone! I'll keep it off the frame and just on fiberglass. I'm a little bummed about discoloration and minor cracking, but looking forward to sound deadening.
I used the Black rubberized Rockgard as it is a bit tougher, can be pressure washed, painted etc and is easy to freshen up wheelwells later on.
Been driving with mine for 6 years and is still holding up well.
did this reduce cabin, or road noise ?
I plan to do this and add the inside floor insulation.
debating if I should use this type of product on both interior, and exterior.
I will only be using this on the Fiberglass areas.
